Kiva.org
So, there's this group, kiva.org. Folks in developing countries send requests for loans for things that would improve their lives. People in presumably developed countries offer aid, $25 at a time. In the spirit of all those kids that Sally Struthers asked us to donate to back in the day, you get progress reports on your "investment" and, once the loan is repaid (to a middleman, who does collect nominal interest from the payor), you get your principal back. At this point, you can invest again, or take your money out, with no penalty.
It's a cool idea...people helping people. And I participate. So, I don't think that Thrillhouse is correct--I think that the loans help. But he's a funny guy none the less.

Great, we're now spreading our culture of debt to goat hearders in the third world. Struggling farmers in Uganda are just like struggling single mothers in the US - the last thing they need is a loan. Sure, that 100 bones you lent him may help his goat business turn the corner, then again, the heard may be wiped out by disease or drought. Then where is he? Enslaved - to you, his new master. If you really, truely want to help that farmer, or that single mom, then give them the money.
